Peer Review of DEMO R&D

The peer review of DEMO R&D has been held twice; the 1st peer review from Feb. 2012 to Oct. 2012, and the 2nd peer review from Mar. 2018 to Sep. 2018. The purpose of the 1st peer review is to review the research and activities performed so far and assess the level of completion of the goals, to review the needs in R&D identified by the DEMO Design Activity (DDA), and assess if some of them could be covered by current Tasks under the DEMO R&D programme (or whether new Tasks could be considered), and to make recommendations to the PL and IAs regarding the future directions of the DEMO R&D programme, and on how to improve the integration of the activities. Based on the assessment, DEMO Joint TCM between DEMO R&D Activity and DDA has been started. The purpose of the 2nd peer review is to review the activities performed after the first peer review, to review the complementary activities of DEMO R&D to be carried out until March 2020, and to review and assess the future plans proposed by the Implementing Agencies for the BA phase II. Based on the review result, the plans for BA Phase II were refined.

DEMO R&D Workshops are held almost every 6 months, in order to report and discuss the achieved results, and to discuss the work plans and reach the consensus.

■ Joint Technical Coordination Meeting (JTCM) between the Demo Design Activity (DDA) and the DEMO R&D Activity

★ 1st 11th September 2013 @Garching
  • In EU, two design options, DEMO1 and DEMO2, are investigated.
  • In JA, acceleration of research on the divertor design, remote maintenance study and blanket design was proposed.
  • The technical and physical DEMO design bases of JA and EU have converged enormously through effective dialogue and collaboration.
★ 2nd 6 February 2014 @Kyoto University, Katsura Campus
  • In JA, R&D issues regarding the establishment of a technological basis for DEMO have been analysed based on hearings from experts.
  • In EU, a study, which was started in 2012, was continued to establish a Material Design Database for DEMO conceptual design activities.
  • In Rokkasho, the license for handling tritium and other radio-active samples was obtained in July 2013.
★ 3rd 26 September 2014 @Barcelona, Spain
  • A potential DEMO will be relatively large(plasma major radius ≳ 8 m) and low power (≤ 1.5-2 GW).
  • In EU, the demonstration of electricity production before 2050 in a DEMO Fusion Reactor that produces its own fuel is the primary objective of EU program.
  • An assessment of the database needed for design activities was proposed as collaboration between EUROfusion (EU) and Japan in Material research.
★ 4th 4 February 2015 @Univ. of Tokyo, Kashiwa Campus
  • A new collaboration in tritium on the investigation in Rokkasho of dust sampled at JET started in 2014. A shipment containing dust sample of JET was transferred to Rokkasho R&D facility.
  • Collaboration is successfully undertaken also on compatibility of SiC and SiC/SiC composites with liquid Pb-Li alloy.
  • The status of EU database & issues addressed in design code activities were reviewed. Both in EU and JA, gap analyses are underway.
★ 5th 3rd November 2015 @Garching
  • Compatibility of SiC/SiC composites with Li-Pb has been examined with rotating disk equipment capable of exposing samples with a wide range of parameters.
  • Observation of JET-ILW tiles and dust was carried out with imaging plates and microscope. Many tungsten dust particles with acute angles were observed.
  • Collaboration was agreed on a material database – with design rule issues as the common issues. JP-IA is positive to collaborate on acquiring the missing irradiation data.
★ 6th 3rd February 2016 @Nagoya University
  • Key corrosion driving sources were identified by various characterization techniques such as SXES, rf-GD-OES, TPD- MS, etc. Corrosion was observed only with flowing Pb-Li, not with still Pb-Li.
  • First results of tritium distribution, microstructure of decomposition layer and contents of both tiles and dust from JET- ILW experiments were obtained.
  • In JA, the current preparation status of database (MPH) of F82H was summarised. The activities in the EDDI (Engineering Data and Design Integration) include gap analysis of EUROFER-97.
★ 7th 9th February 2017 @Kyoto University, Uji Campus
  • Extension of IFERC project up to December 2019 was approved in BA SC-17. DEMO related activities in the extended period (2017/6-2019/12) will be implemented mostly as voluntary contributions.
  • The EU-JA collaborative studies under the BA framework have produced very fruitful results. An apparatus for SiC/SiC composites was made by ENEA Frascati by using EU knowledge, and has been used for a series of corrosion experiments by JA by using JA knowledge. Several samples of tiles and dust from JET-ILW were sent to JA, and valuable data have been obtained by using unique JA facilities installed in a radiological controlled area. Several samples of functional materials have been exchanged between EU and JA.
  • The material database of F82H was reconstructed.
